New Spells! (and descrips)

Because not every spell we find makes its way into the spell lists….

(Orinocco)

-The Mage’s Guild is highly illegal and is therefore forced to remain quite secretive.
-Most members of the guild don’t even know one another very well.  They try to maintain some anonymity even from other mages.
-This is because Tser has several spies planted among the group.
-The spell which Lemat wants — called ‘Surrogation.’

Surrogation (Level 8)

Range: touch
Duration: 1d6+6 turns
Effect: produces caster’s own spells from a proxy, up to three miles per level

When this spell is cast upon a live creature with mercury in its bloodstream, the creature becomes a proxy for that caster.  For the duration of the surrogation, any spell of fourth level or less cast by the master of the proxy and intended for the proxy will emanate from the proxy instead of the caster.  No more than 2d2 spells can be cast in this manner before the surrogation spell is expired.  The caster does not automatically gain control over the proxy, and surrogation will not work if the proxy goes beyond the maximum range of the spell (three miles per level of the caster).  If the proxy is killed the spell expires. Although Surrogation is an eight level spell, it may be made into a permanent effect by means of the magic-user ‘Permanence’ spell or any similar spell-like effect.

Due to the scarcity of living creatures which can survive on a diet of mercury pills, finding good proxies is often difficult.

(MUMMY Excavation)

As it turns out, two of the tablets simply contain liturgical texts (i.e. texts to be read aloud during worship). At first glance, anyway, nothing
of particular interest can be learned from them. They simply praise the goddess in an almost tiring number of ways and address her by three different names (“the Cloud-Piercer”, “the Night Watcher” and “Great Commander of the Mawoku”). The purpose of Somshan liturgy, it seems, is simply to praise, not to relate legends or myths about its key figure. But four tablets also contain spells. They are all cleric spells, of course, but three of them are unique. I have listed them here:

  • Protection from Evil 10′ Radius (4th level)
  • Summon Shadows (6th level)
  • Obsidian Panther (6th level)
  • Lingering Pneuma (7th level)

Protection from Evil 10′ Radius (4th level)

Summon Shadows (6th level)

Range: 60′
Duration: 6 hours+1turn/level
Effect: Summons 2d4 shadows to do caster’s bidding.

All shadows must remain within 240′ of the caster.

Obsidian Panther (6th level)

Range: 0 (cleric only)
Duration: 4 hours+1turn/level
Effect: Protects caster with an obsidian panther

AC: -1
HD: 12**
Move: 240′ (80′)
Attacks: 2 claws/1 bite +special
Damage: 2d4/2d4/2d8
No. Appearing: 1
Save As: Cleric 12
Morale: 12
Treasure Type: Nil
Intelligence: 16
XP Value: 3,000

4 in 6 chance of surprise. Bitten victims must save vs. paralysis/turn to stone or turn into dark-colored glass. This effect cannot be reversed by the “stone to flesh” spell.

The panther guards the caster against all potential sources of harm, whether in life or in his dreams.  The panther can freely enter into the
caster’s dream-state to take actions, even during immortal visitations.

Although the panther will not take direct orders, it has free access to the caster’s thoughts and is highly intelligent.  Therefore it is quite capable of perceiving when its charge is in danger.

Lingering Pneuma (7th level)

Range: Touch
Duration: Permanent
Effect: Allows one person to maintain magical control in death

When this spell is cast, the cleric must have a large silver bowl and two kidneys: one from a vampire or nosferatu and one from the spell’s beneficiary.  Casting the spell requires a short ceremony which takes 35 minutes.  When the ceremony is over the caster must make a savings throw vs. spells -4 to prevent losing one point of constitution.

Upon the successful completion of this spell, the beneficiary becomes endowed with the ability to watch over his own grave in the afterlife. During this time he will be able to maintain control over any monsters, golems, homunculi, undead or other magically controlled creatures which he governed (magically) at the time of death.  Such creatures must stay within one-half mile of the beneficiary’s corpse at all times.

This spell is typically used to watch over the graves of those who have died of old age, but it is conceivable to use it to great benefit under other circumstances.  For example, someone who is slain all alone in the wilderness could instruct any golem under his control (within one-half mile) to carry his corpse to a cleric and have it raised.

This spell can only be dispelled by a dispel magic spell cast by an immortal of 52nd-level proficiency or higher or by a carefully-worded wish.

When this spell takes effect at the time of the beneficiary’s death, it alters the nature of his connection to the creatures controlled. Creatures whose connection to the caster is only temporary (such as an elemental’s) become permanently enslaved.  Creatures whose servitude could be dispelled (such as those created by the “animate dead” spell) can no longer be dispelled (except as specified above).  However, creatures whose very existence is temporary, such as those created by the “create any monster” spell, will still vanish at the end of the normal duration.  All of these effects are reversed if the beneficiary is somehow made to live again.

If either the beneficiary’s corpse or all of his magically controlled creatures are destroyed, he will lose interest after one day and depart.

Triumvirate

In the market, Efrim and Al buy a scroll with a spell that is like magic missile but does 3d6+3 per missile, and it can create up to 5 missiles.  We name the spell “Magic Javelins”.
